Black Books: Tomes of the Outer Dark (BBG Legacy Edition) is an investigative horror role-playing game rooted in the OSR tradition. In Black Books the player characters are ordinary people (historians, detectives, scholars, artists, etc) drawn into a dark and horrific version of our world - the world of Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos.

As the investigators learn more of the true horrors of the world and the irrelevance of humanity, their sanity inevitably withers away. The rules are biased towards playing in the 1920’s although there is no reason these rules can’t be adapted to other time periods.

Rooted in the OSR, the rules are familiar - they use a D20 for most actions - and the games is class based, with multiple investigator classes - Charmer, Enforcer, Sneak, Scholar and Spiritualist.

Plus two (2) bonus classes!

  • Dilettante
  • Gadabout

If you like old school gaming and you like horror, this might well be the game you're looking for!

Hello!  Surprised to see this on Itch from a new publisher!  Does this edition differ from the previous edition sold by Beyond Belief Games?  (I own the previous edition…wondering if I should add this one).  Please advise - thank you!

(1 edit)

Greetings! Essentially yes, it is the same as the final Beyond Belief Games release of the title. As we acquired the title - and three others - from Mr Washbourne / BBG earlier this year we did some minor touchups and wanted to release a "BBG Legacy" edition prior to our eventual revision down the road.

The differences are:

  • Adjusted the Copyright page to show new ownership and publisher.
  • Replaced British Spellings with American Spellings.
  • Minor Adjustment to the Introduction Text.
  • Reformatted the Table of Contents and Tables. Emphasized Various Headings (i.e., capitalization, bold, italics, etc.).
  • Miscellaneous Grammatical Corrections.
  • Expansion of Table 12 “Fear of...” from being unrollable to D66.
  • Addition of the Appendix, adjustments to the OGL ver. 1.0a Copyright Notice, and Corrections to Illustration Attributions.
  • Added a “Coming Soon from WPGL” Advertisement Page.

Thanks for asking!
